The benefits of better insulation in Welsh homes: a guide

7 June 2026 · 3 min read

Discover the advantages of proper insulation, from lower energy bills and improved comfort to a healthier, drier home.

Insulation does more than save money. A well-insulated home is warmer in winter, cooler in summer, quieter, and far less prone to damp and mould — all problems familiar to anyone living in a draughty Welsh property.

Modern materials are also dramatically better than what was being installed even a decade ago. If your loft was last done in the 1990s, there's a strong chance it's now compressed below the depth that actually works.

We start every project with a thorough survey so we can recommend the right measure for your specific property — not a one-size-fits-all upsell. Every recommendation is backed by a clear rationale, material spec and installation method.

Savings

How much could I save with loft insulation?

Savings depend on your property type, the depth of any existing insulation and how your home is heated. The figures below show typical annual savings when going from an uninsulated loft to the recommended 300 mm depth in a gas-heated home.

Property typeTypical annual savingTypical CO₂ saving / year
Detached house£445740 kg
Semi-detached house£285470 kg
Mid-terrace house£255420 kg
Detached bungalow£315520 kg
Mid-floor flat£170280 kg

Typical install cost is £1,000–£2,000 for the standard Earthwool system, or £2,000–£3,500 for the natural IndiTherm Hemp specification. Topping up insulation below ~120 mm is still well worth doing — many older Welsh lofts have compressed or patchy material performing well below spec.

Savings figures based on Energy Saving Trust typical-home estimates for a gas-heated property, uninsulated loft to 300 mm. Your actual savings will vary with property, fuel and usage.
